Freida Pinto was born in Mumbai to Sylvia Pinto, now a principal of St. John’s Universal High School (Goregaon), and Frederick Pinto, a senior branch manager at the Bank of Baroda. Freida Pinto’s father is from Neerude and mother from Derebail, both towns in Mangalore. Her elder sister Sharon Pinto is an associate producer on the NDTV news channel.

Pinto studied at Carmel of St. Joseph School in Malad and completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She currently resides in Malad, a suburb of Mumbai.

She is also trained in different forms of Indian classical dance as well as Salsa.

Pinto met Rohan Antao while attending St Xavier’s College in Mumbai. The two began dating and got engaged in 2008, but Pinto called off the engagement in January 2009.

Before starring in Slumdog Millionaire, Freida anchored the international travel show, Full Circle on Zee International Asia Pacific in English between 2006-08. Pinto was also featured in several television and print advertisements for products such as Wrigley’s Chewing Gum, Škoda, Hutch, Airtel, and DeBeers. Pinto took time out in December 2008 to star in Canadian Award winning singer song writer Dal Hothi’s music video, I Promise You.Pinto modeled for ten years and appeared in runway shows and magazine covers. She learned acting from The Barry John’s Acting Studio in Andheri and was trained by his mentor Barry John. After six months of auditions, she received a call to audition for Slumdog Millionaire. Pinto auditioned for Danny Boyle and was short-listed and finally selected to star in Slumdog Millionaire.

Pinto made her film debut in 2008. Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on a game show and exceeds people’s expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials. In the movie, Pinto played the role of Latika, the girl with whom Jamal (Dev Patel) is in love. At the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, the movie won the Cadillac People’s Choice Award. At the 2009 Golden Globe Awards, the movie won four awards. Pinto herself was nominated for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” at the 2009 BAFTA Awards, and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture alongside ten other cast members from Slumdog Millionaire.

Pinto has been cast in Woody Allen’s next film set in London. Other cast members include Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and Naomi Watts. Shooting for the film starts in July 2009.

For his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger won the 2005 New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor and the 2006 “Best Actor” award from the Australian Film Institute and was nominated for the 2005 Academy Award for Best Actor as well as the 2006 Best Actor award from the BAFTA. Posthumously he shared the 2007 Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award with the rest of the ensemble cast, the director, and the casting director for the film, I’m Not There which was inspired by the life and songs of American singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan.In the film, Ledger portrayed a fictional actor named Robbie Clark, one of six characters embodying aspects of the iconic Dylan. He was nominated and won awards for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, a Best Actor International Award at the 2008 Australian Film Institute Awards, for which he became the first actor to win an award posthumously, and the 2008 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor and the 2009 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a motion picture.

He died at the age of 28, from an accidental “toxic combination of prescription drugs.” A few months before his death, Ledger had finished filming his penultimate performance, as the Joker in The Dark Knight. At the time of his death, on 22 January 2008, he had completed about half of his work performing the role of Tony in Terry Gilliam’s forthcoming film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

Plot Summary

Beautiful young Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), a wealthy socialite whose father is the proprietor of a large newspaper, visits a pet shop in Union Square in San Francisco, to pick up a myna bird she has ordered for her aunt, which was to arrive at the shop by 3 PM. While she’s there, Melanie meets Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), a lawyer who is looking for a pair of lovebirds to give to his sister. As a playful gag, Melanie pretends to be the shopkeeper and Mitch pretends to believe her, but eventually he reveals that he already knows who she is; Mitch recognizes her from a court appearance and blames Melanie for a prank that shattered somebody’s plate glass window.

Intrigued by him, she buys the lovebirds, finds out Mitch’s address in the city, and tries to deliver them to his apartment – but a neighbour tells her that Mitch spends the weekend on the family farm, 60 miles up the coast in Bodega Bay, a small coastal village. Melanie drives to Bodega Bay in her Aston Martin DB2/4 Mark I Drophead Coupe and is directed to the home of Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette), the local school teacher, to learn the name of Mitch’s sister Cathy (Veronica Cartwright). Melanie delivers the birds by sneaking across the small harbor in a tiny boat to the Brenner residence, rather than taking the road where she would definitely be seen. Melanie walks right into the house and leaves the birds on a table with a note. As Melanie is headed back across the bay, Mitch circles around in his car to meet her. Just as she is about to pull up to the dock, a seagull swoops down and gashes her head.

Mitch takes her to a small diner nearby and tends to her cut. While there, Melanie meets Mitch’s mother, Lydia (Jessica Tandy), who reacts to her icily. Melanie dines with Mitch and his family during which Lydia complains that their chickens have not been eating and fears they may be ill. Melanie and Mitch continue to flirt with each other, but as Melanie leaves they have an argument where Mitch playfully questions her and suggests that she might be a spoiled rich girl with a reckless streak. She bristles at this and departs in a huff.

Melanie takes a room at Annie’s that night and Annie reveals that she and Mitch were lovers once, a relationship that was cut short by the cool reaction she got from Lydia. As the women are talking, Mitch calls to apologize for upsetting Melanie and convinces her to come to Cathy’s birthday party the next day. Toward the end of their conversation, the women hear a thud against the front door and discover a dead gull sprawled on the porch.

Lydia and Mitch bandage Melanie’s wounds but realize she must get to a hospital. They decide on Melanie’s car, because it is faster. Mitch ventures outside to fetch the car from the garage, while Lydia and Cathy get Melanie ready. In a surreal and apocalyptic scene, a sea of landed birds ripples menacingly around them but do not attack. The car radio gives reports of several smaller attacks by birds in a few other communities in coastal California. The sea of birds parts as they slowly proceed toward the road and pick up speed. The film concludes with the sun rising as the four of them drive away from the farm, down the coast road and out of sight.
