Red Sonja (2009)

Red Sonja is an upcoming sword and sorcery/action film, starring Rose McGowan in the titular role as Red Sonja.

Plot

In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.

Production

Rose McGowan and Robert Rodriguez presented the project at the Comic Con’08. The movie is expected to be released in the last quarter of 2009 or even 2010. Filming commenced in October 2008.

Trivia

• The movie is likely to be based on Issues 9-12 of the comics. While the story is remaining a secret as of now, Rodriguez said that those issues are the origins of Red Sonja.
• The film is aiming for a solid R rating. While at the 2008 Comic-Con, Robert Rodriguez joked, “My name is ‘Double R. We’re gonna give you a double R, baby!” Rose also noted, “This movie is going to be hard, its gonna be cold, its gonna be dirty, bloody. But I’m up for it.”
• Rose will be doing her own stunts and has been working out three hours a day.
• Because of his commitments, Rodriguez wasn’t able to direct Sonja and instead offered up the reins to his friend, Douglas Aarniokoski. He did promise that he’ll be extremely hands-on as a producer to the extent that it’ll basically be unofficial co-directing. Rodriguez had been trying to get Red Sonja on the big screen for years and, coincidentally, the script came across McGowan’s desk at exactly the right time.
• At the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con convention, Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan debuted the first look at Rose as Red Sonja with exclusive teaser posters.
• The film will be produced by Robert Rodriguez and is set to begin shooting this fall.
• On June 27, 2007, USA Today announced that Rose McGowan is to star as Red Sonja.

Sequel

Director Douglas Aarniokoski has said that the films ” definitely got franchise written all over it.”.
