Floyd Mayweather, Jr. – American professional boxer
Floyd Joy Mayweather, Jr. (born Floyd Joy Sinclair on February 24, 1977), is an undefeated American professional boxer who has a record of 39-0 (25 KOs). He is the son of Floyd Mayweather, Sr., a former welterweight boxing contender.
From July 18, 2005 through June 2, 2008 he was rated by The Ring magazine as the number-one pound for pound boxer in the world. Mayweather has won six world boxing championships in five different weight classes; he is the former WBC welterweight champion, a title he vacated upon his retirement. He was named Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year in 1998 and 2007. ESPN.com listed Mayweather at #48 on their “50 Greatest Boxers of All Time” list.
Floyd Mayweather was born Floyd Joy Sinclair in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his mother’s last name. His last name would change to Mayweather shortly thereafter. His father, Floyd Mayweather, Sr., is a former welterweight contender, while two of his uncles, Jeff Mayweather and Roger Mayweather, won world championship belts.
MMA Controversy
Before his May 2007 fight with De La Hoya, Mayweather criticized the Ultimate Fighting Championship, stating that any quality boxer could easily become the champion and that, while boxing is an art, UFC was a temporary fad. UFC President Dana White stated that he was willing to organize a fight with then Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk, and the two met with Mayweather at his Las Vegas hotel. Mayweather publicly apologized to UFC and turned down the offer of a fight, saying “I respect MMA fighters and what they do in the UFC. I have no plans of fighting in mixed martial arts.”
Mayweather Jr. vs. Márquez
On May 1, 2009, it was confirmed that Mayweather is coming out of a 16-month retirement to fight Juan Manuel Márquez on July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on HBO PPV. The fight will be at the Light Welterweight division.
